GHS searching for new boys' wrestling head coach

With the retirement of Jon Murray after more than three decades as Geneseo’s boys’ wrestling head coach, one of the best programs in Illinois is now looking for a new leader.

Murray, who was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2023, steps away from a program that added to its rich history during his long tenure. GHS Wrestling has produced three individual state champions since 2009 (27 total medalists in that span) and finished top four as a team three times since 2013.

In the 2024-25 season, Geneseo defeated Sycamore 45-25 in a dual team sectional to advance to state, where they fell to Elmhurst (IC Catholic) in the quarterfinals. Eight individuals qualified for this year’s IHSA State Tournament, with Kye Weinzierl finishing 2nd in 2A’s 175-pound weight class. Zachary Montez (165) claimed 4th place to finish his illustrious high school career as the first ever to become a 4-time Western Big 6 champion, 4-time regional champion, and 4-time All-Stater. He is now Geneseo’s all-time winningest wrestler with 178 wins.

GHS searching for new boys' wrestling head coachGHS Wrestling benefits from a strong feeder system including the Geneseo Middle School team. Its annual Geneseo Invitational is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the state. The program has very supportive boosters, and there is a separate staff for the girls’ wrestling team.

In addition to having a dedicated wrestling room/gym at GHS, student-athletes also train in the Geneseo Foundation Activity Center, located steps from the high school’s north doors. The 40,000-square-foot fieldhouse features an expansive weight room and is staffed by a full-time strength and conditioning coach.
