GHS Life Skills students recognized at BOE meeting

Geneseo High School Principal Tom Ryerson was on hand at February’s Board of Education meeting to recognize three exceptional Life Skills students: Rileigh Chambers, Katelyn DeRycke and Landon Bassett.

“Our Life Skills program is one of the things I’m most proud of at our high school,” said Ryerson. “We’re here to not only celebrate it, but to highlight the many ways our students contribute to our school and our community with the different jobs they take on.”

Sheila Puls, a Life Skills teacher at GHS, explained that the students take on a variety of tasks, including working in the copy center, cleaning the cafeteria, picking up recycling, delivering coffee, distributing staff mail, and doing laundry.

The students also make t-shirts, and they came to the meeting with a few finished products to give to members of the Board of Education.

As Megan VerStraete, another Life Skills teacher at GHS, pointed out, the aforementioned jobs allow the students to learn and master a number of skills, including how to follow directions, operate with organization, take on responsibilities, be punctual, and sharpen social skills.

Superintendent Dr. Brumbaugh joined in celebrating the students, and awarded each of them with a Maple Leaf Medallion, the district’s highest honor.

“We love our students, we love our staff, and I’m glad we are able to celebrate them like this,” said Ryerson.
