Geneseo High School Principal Tom Ryerson and members of his staff shared five new courses on Thursday evening for the Board of Education’s consideration.
The classes include AP Environmental Science, Foundations in Biology, Art Appreciation, Personal Fitness PE and Unified PE.
“These new courses at Geneseo High School expand options for students based on their interests and career goals,” stated Principal Ryerson. “We’re excited to give students meaningful choices that align with their passions and prepare them for future success.”
A first reading of the course proposals was held on Thursday and the BOE will have an opportunity to approve the courses for the 2025-26 school year at its December 12 meeting.
On hand to provide an overview of the courses are the teachers who would instruct them — Sara Bertelsen, Sarah Degarmo, Megan Miller and Kristy Vanopdorp.
AP Environmental Science would target 11th and 12th graders. Students would learn how to use the tools of science to address big questions about our planet’s future. Offering the course would give students the chance to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by addressing real-world environmental issues such as climate change, water and soil pollution. It would also prepare students for college-level science classes and promote environmental awareness, encouraging informed and responsible decision-making.
Foundations In Biology would be offered to 9th graders and cover fundamental life concepts, including cell structure, genetics, evolution, ecology, and interactions among organisms. The course would enhance the high school’s biology curriculum and better meet the diverse needs of students. The course focuses on developing critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and data analysis in a collaborative setting to prepare students for success in future science courses and post-secondary education.
Art Appreciation would be a dual credit course for 11th and 12th graders and provide an introduction to the world of fine and applied arts. Students will learn the elements and principles of art and the media and processes used in various artforms, and gather information about how a work of art is conceived and constructed using the visual elements of art, principles of design, composition, content, style, and symbolism. The course teaches students how to analyze and evaluate art works utilizing the knowledge of the visual elements and principles of design.
Personal Fitness PE would be available for 10th-12th graders. This year-long personal fitness course promotes health and wellness through activities like cardio, strength training, flexibility exercises, and mindfulness. Students will engage in running, yoga, HIIT, and leisure sports to build lifelong fitness habits. The course emphasizes personalized health and wellness, focusing on individual fitness goals rather than team sports. Students will learn to create customized fitness routines tailored to their specific health needs, fitness levels, and interests, fostering lifelong healthy habits.
Unified PE, which would be available for all high school students, is an inclusive course designed for students who may not typically participate in general physical education, as well as those who do. The class teaches skills to benefit all students, providing opportunities to engage in new social environments while modeling skills for peers. Activities are adapted to meet individual needs, ensuring a supportive environment for everyone. The course provides a unique opportunity for students with and without disabilities to come together through ongoing educational and physical activities.
