Four seats for the Geneseo Community Unit School District #228 Board of Education will be on the ballot during the Consolidated Election on April 1, 2025.
Petition circulation for the spring election opened August 20 for school board candidates. The first day that petitions can be filed is November 12, and the last day of filing is November 18.
To become a school board candidate, one must file a Statement of Economic Interests with the county clerk and obtain a receipt, and complete a nominating petition signed by at least 50 registered voters and a Statement of Candidacy. The aforementioned forms are available from the county clerk or county board of election commissioners.
School boards are a unit of local government that establish direction, goals, and priorities for a school district and determine policy, budget, leadership, and administration. According to the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB), nearly 6,000 men and women serve on local public school boards in Illinois, governing the education of nearly 2 million public school students across 850 school districts. School board members are elected by their local communities and serve four-year terms.
Interested candidates must be district residents and fall within the geographical limitations set forth in the Geneseo School District Congressional Townships. IASB will host a series of webinars for interested candidates and provide other resources and materials to assist school board candidates with navigating the election process and understanding the duties and responsibilities of an effective school leader.
